QTT, INC. Releases New Pavement Condition Reporting Software for RWIS
08-01-2006
(ST. LOUIS, MO November 2006) – Quixote Transportation Technologies, Inc. (QTT) has designed, tested and released the latest in pavement condition reporting software known as STORM Vision™. STORM Vision is a dramatic change in the way pavement condition and other calculated RWIS (Road / Runway Weather Information System) values are made.
The fundamental concept behind RWIS is that a sophisticated computer with a suite of sensors can report the condition of the pavement in place of a human observer. The pavement condition decision-making is performed by the Remote Processing Unit (RPU), a custom designed computer at each site that controls sensors, gathers data, and stores data until called upon. The major advancement is that the RPU no longer looks at a single decision point to determine a value. STORM Vision considers multiple data values, and individually weighs them to produce the most accurate pavement condition available in the industry.
Specifically, some of the improvements include: more accurate reporting of a “Wet” status when pavements are above freezing; reduced amount of “Ice Warnings” when pavements are below freezing; reporting more “Ice Watches” when conditions are possible, but not likely; using multiple pieces of information to report “Frost” conditions rather than a single decision point; and more meaningful chemical factor values.
STORM Vision is available on the newer QTT Linux-based RPU platforms (purchased after July 2004), which includes the RWIS elite and RWIS advanced products. Updates in software will be performed free of charge to all QTT Linux-based RPU customers either through remote access or during an on-site maintenance visit.
“STORM Vision is an important reason why customers need to consider purchasing or budgeting future upgrades to their RWIS sites regularly – to ensure they are getting the most RWIS has to offer,” comments Jon Tarleton, Marketing Development Manager-Meteorologist for QTT.
